Superstarlet Natalie Imbruglia could easily be found in the city of Toronto yesterday as she made appearences to help bring more awareness to diease that affects over 2,000,000 women in the Third World to live as outcasts.
“Governments … should make it their responsibility to end this unnecessary suffering,” said the famous singer, who is alsoa spokeswoman for the United Nations effort to fight obstetric fistula in Third World nations. “They needed a voice … someone who wasn’t scared to talk about it. I’m up for a challenge,” said Natalie Imbruglia while making an appearence at the Spoke Club on King St.Dr. Ambereen Sleemi also made an appearence at the Spoke Club, to speak about his trips to Africa to perform surguries, said the condition sometimes causes husbands to abandon their wives, and communities to shun the women. “It’s like pounding your fist against a wall. It’s your fist that will give way,”
The condition causes a portion of body tissue to die, during childbirth, leaving a hole that leaves many woman unable to control their body waste, many victims are forced out of their homes due to the resulting smell. The truly sad news is that a small $300 USD surgery easily repairs the damage and can restore a woman’s dignity and lifestyle yet so very few Africans can afford the surgery and live as outcasts.
“They’re just beaming … their dignity’s back,” Imbruglia said, describing women she met in Nigeria after their sucessful surgeries. “They do a little dance when they’ve had their surgery. You’re giving women back their lives because living with fistula is not really living.”
