Natalie Imbruglia: from Down Under
She may come from down under, but Natalie Imbruglia sure made it to the top, thanks to her natural talents and dark, captivating looks. She has managed to stay at the top even after the release of three albums, nine singles, and ten music videos. Let’s not forget, she also has a contract with L’Oreal Cosmetics where she promotes skin and beauty products for the cosmetic giant.
Born in February 4, 1975, Natalie is an Australian singer, composer, model and actress. Her father is Italian, her mother Australian. The family lived in the north of Sydney. Natalie took up ballet as a child but she decided to audition instead for television commercials in Australia and landed gigs with Coke and the popular snack, Twisties. Like her contemporaries Kylie Minogue and Holly Valance, Natalie appeared in the Australian soap opera, Neighbors, before she moved to London to try her luck in the city’s clubs.
Natalie moved on to songwriting and it wasn’t long before BMG Publishing signed her up after she sang a demo for a song she composed entitled “Torn”. RCA Records was impressed with both the song and the singer that they immediately granted her a recording contract.
Speaking of her acting career, Natalie appeared in the British comedy film, Johnny English, playing opposite Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame. The film did rather well, despite some unfavorable reviews.
Devoting most of her energies towards singing and composing, she released Torn which made it to the # 2 slot in British charts. It also hit the airwaves in the US making its mark in the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay for 11 weeks. After Torn, her first album, Left of the Middle, was released, containing singles like Big Mistake, Wishing I was There, and Smoke. The album was successful in both the UK and Australia, and made it to the top 10 in the US. In 2001, Imbruglia’s second album, White Lilies Island, came out. It was named after one of her summer homes, and took almost three years to produce. The songs in this album only experienced moderate success in the UK and in the US. In spite of this, 1 million copies of the album were sold.
Natalie Imbruglia married her beau, Daniel Johns, who is the lead singer in Silverchair, in 2003.
